bv. đ¨BREAKING: Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey could be shifting between cornerback and safety roles as defensive coordinator Teryl Austin keeps his options open. Mike Tomlin praised Ramseyâs instincts, calling his flexibility a major asset amid injuries in the secondary.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey might end up moving back and forth between cornerback and safety, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said.
While head coach Mike Tomlin said that Ramsey would end up playing safety this week against the Chargers, Austin did not commit to that being the case for the rest of the season, and says it is more about injuries that have popped up in that room.
âWeâll keep Jalen where we need to keep him,â Austin said. âObviously, he did a heck of a job last week playing full-time free safety for us. Really did a good job. He can overlap, he can run, heâs just a good football player. So weâll see where that leads us moving forward.â
Kyle Dugger stepped up to play all but one snap after the New England Patriots traded him to the Steelers, and Chuck Clark as well as Jabrill Pepper shave dealt with availability concerns.
âJalen will continue to work exclusively at safety,â Tomlin said. âWe value his play, his positional flexibility. Itâs an asset to us. It gives a lot of people things to work on, but certainly under the circumstances that weâre under right now, we deemed that appropriate as we did last week in terms of nailing him down there.â
Pittsburgh knew when they traded for him this offseason that he could stick at safety. He has also played a lot of snaps at slot cornerback and outside cornerback, and it seems likely that as the weeks go along, Ramsey will continue to move around.
âItâs just his relationship with the game,â Tomlin said about Ramseyâs skillset at safety.. âHeâs got really good instincts; heâs got really good passion for the game. He studies the game, and I think those are some things that really enable him to play back there, and thatâs such a major component of that position.â
Ramsey handled Colts tight end Tyler Warren for much of the teamâs 27-20 win over the Colts on Sunday, and their simplistic defensive style helped the entire group play fast and sure of themselves.
