RM Kansas City Chiefs’ latest practice squad move suggests dissatisfaction with a recent roster decision

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their Week 12 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, and their most recent roster adjustment hints that the coaching staff wasn’t fully satisfied with how things went the week prior.
On Saturday, Kansas City made just one practice squad elevation. This contrasts with Week 11, when the team chose not to elevate anyone ahead of their game against the Denver Broncos. Instead, they reverted to a strategy similar to what they used in Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills.
Chiefs call up RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire for Week 12 vs. Colts
With Isiah Pacheco still sidelined, Kansas City appears ready to use the familiar trio of Kareem Hunt, Brashard Smith, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The team experimented last week by activating free-agent running back Elijah Mitchell, who joined Hunt and Smith in the rotation. Mitchell, however, saw limited action—only seven offensive snaps, no carries, and one target that unfortunately turned into a Patrick Mahomes interception.
While Edwards-Helaire had only a modest impact in Week 9—two rushing attempts for minimal yardage—it’s evident that the Chiefs trust him more than Mitchell at this point.
Quick facts about Clyde Edwards-Helaire
- Age: 26
- Selected 32nd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft
- Drafted ahead of Colts RB Jonathan Taylor
- Two-time Super Bowl champion (LVII, LVIII)
Andy Reid has noted that Edwards-Helaire’s involvement often depends on the matchup. The last and only time CEH faced the Colts was in 2022, in a game where he produced one of the strangest stat lines imaginable: seven carries for zero yards and a touchdown, along with a perfect 5-for-5 receiving performance for 39 yards.
This Week 12 elevation is Edwards-Helaire’s second of the season. He still has one standard practice squad elevation remaining before the Chiefs would need to expose him to waivers in order to place him on the 53-man roster again. With Isiah Pacheco making steady progress in his recovery from an MCL sprain, the team hopes they won’t be forced into that situation.
