RM Patrick Mahomes addresses torn ACL: ‘Don’t know why this had to happen’

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes opened up about the torn ACL he sustained during his team’s 16-13 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury occurred in the final moments of the game when he was tackled from behind by Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand. Mahomes immediately clutched his left knee and needed medical attention before being assisted off the field and into the locker room.
Shortly before the Chiefs confirmed that an MRI had revealed a season-ending ACL tear, Mahomes shared a heartfelt message on social media. “I don’t know why this had to happen, and to be honest, it hurts,” he wrote. “But all I can do now is trust in God and give it everything I’ve got, day by day.”

Despite the setback, Mahomes remained positive, promising to return stronger than ever and expressing gratitude toward Chiefs fans for their ongoing support.
As of now, the Chiefs have not provided a specific timeline for Mahomes’ recovery. They stated that both the team and Mahomes are “exploring surgical options,” meaning his status for the start of the 2026 season is uncertain.

With Mahomes out for the rest of the 2025 season, the Chiefs will likely turn to Gardner Minshew as their quarterback. However, with Kansas City’s playoff hopes dashed after the loss to the Chargers, the Chiefs will only need a temporary solution at the quarterback position. This marks the first time since 2014 that the Chiefs will miss the playoffs.
