RM Travis Kelce Plans to Rest Before Making Retirement Decision

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce recently shared an update on his NFL future during an episode of the New Heights podcast, which he hosts alongside his brother, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.
The conversation began on a lighthearted note, as Travis joked about his current employment status following the end of the Chiefs’ season.
“I’m officially jobless, Jason,” he said with a laugh. “Well… this is my only job.”
Jason quickly pushed back, pointing out that Travis is still under contract unless he decides to retire. Travis clarified that, for now, the podcast is his only active role.

Although Kelce will not officially become an unrestricted free agent until the new league year begins on March 11 at 3:00 p.m. Arrowhead Time, he must first decide whether he wants to continue playing. That decision will guide his agents in potential contract talks with Kansas City or another team.
One unexpected benefit of the Chiefs’ disappointing season is the extra recovery time it gives Kelce. After years of deep playoff runs, the future Hall of Famer now has a longer offseason to rest and reflect.
“At the end of every season, I just try to relax and be a normal person,” Kelce explained. “I’ve put my body through a lot because I love this game. I enjoy the physical side of football. There’s something about enduring the grind, feeling worn down—it makes you feel like you’re just surviving out there.”
For the first time in years, Kelce is finishing his season earlier than usual. The 36-year-old had played at least three postseason games in each of the past six seasons, making this extended break unfamiliar territory. Still, he sees it as valuable time to evaluate his future.

“I’ve already had some exit meetings with people in the building, and they know where I’m at right now,” he said. “The love for the game is still there. I don’t think that ever goes away. It’s just a tough decision.”
Ultimately, Kelce said his choice will depend on how his body responds to rest and recovery, though his desire to play remains strong.
“If my body can heal and I feel like I can handle another 18 to 21 weeks, I’d do it without hesitation,” he said. “Right now, it’s just about seeing how I feel once everything settles.”

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has publicly expressed confidence that Kelce will return next season. When Jason mentioned Jones’ comments on the podcast, Travis responded with a smile.
“That’s why we love Chris,” Kelce said. “He’s always optimistic.”
With a longer offseason and fewer games played this year, that optimism may not be misplaced. Kelce still appears capable of competing at a high level, and his passion for football remains clear. If his body cooperates, this added rest could be exactly what allows him to extend his career for at least one more season.
