The injury occurred when there was just over six minutes left for the second quarter to end. Kittle hauled in a short 6-yard pass from quarterback Brock Purdy and was tackled by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun while charging toward the goal line. He buckled and collapsed in pain, unable to continue, and was carted off the field.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed after the game that it was a torn Achilles tendon in his right leg. It is expected that he will be out for around 9 to 12 months, meaning his 2025 NFL season is over and the 49ers must play the remaining playoff games without him.
Claire, who is the tight end’s wife, wrote a message on her Instagram account. Using references from American president Theodore Roosevelt’s “The Man in the Arena” speech, she rallied for her husband’s comeback. Her message was, “He is the man who is not only daring enough to strive for things most would be too different to attempt, but he always does it all with great enthusiasm.”
She also added that he will be better when he recovers from his injury, “No doubt he will take on this recovery with the same tenacity as he does with everything else, and he will back better than ever before. We love you.” Kittle’s teammates were also supportive of the player, and were inspired to win the game for him.

Running back Christian McCaffrey was on point against the Eagles, scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 48 yards. He lamented the loss of Kittle and called him the team’s heart and soul. He said, “It’s hard to do, man. This team has carried the character of George Kittle throughout the entire year, and since I got traded here, he’s the heart and soul of this team.”
Offensive tackle Trent Williams said that they were inspired to win the game for Kittle, “Instead of guys feeling sorry for us and feeling sorry for him, we decided we were going to play for him and try to pull it out for him.”
With Kittle sidelined, the 49ers will turn to backup tight ends Jake Tonges and Luke Farrell to fill the gap. They have to be ready for their next game on Saturday, which is against the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round.
