Kohen’s journey began long before he was born. At 37 weeks, when most babies are ready to meet the world, Kohen’s entry was nothing like what his family had envisioned. From the moment he was born, it was clear that he would face challenges that no child should ever have to endure. His condition was dire — missing his corpus callosum, which is crucial for communication between the brain’s hemispheres, Kohen’s life would be filled with many unknowns and hurdles. But his parents, Brooke and her family, were determined to give him every chance to fight and thrive.

At just three days old, Kohen developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition that affects the intestines. It was another blow for his family, as they were already grappling with the initial uncertainty of his condition. NEC meant that Kohen’s tiny body was fighting against more than one battle, and the first days of his life were spent fighting for survival. The doctors were cautious, but Kohen’s strength, despite his fragility, was beginning to show. His fight for life had only just begun.

Kohen’s struggles were far from over. Over the next months, Kohen underwent seven stomach surgeries to combat the complications from NEC and other related issues. These surgeries would change the course of his life, removing much of his small bowel, and Kohen was left living with just 15% of it remaining.
