PF.⚡ LATEST UPDATE: This holiday season brought more than joy—it delivered a Christmas miracle for Spencer and Mason after unimaginable adversity
The holidays are a time for families to come together, share joy, and celebrate life. But for 9-year-old Mason and his dad, Spencer, this holiday season almost didn’t come together at all. Just a few weeks ago, they weren’t sure they’d both make it home in time for Christmas.
Mason’s journey had been nothing short of a battle. In June, he was diagnosed with leukemia, and ever since, his life had been defined by hospital visits, chemotherapy, and the emotional and physical toll of his treatment. The young boy’s energy and spirit were tested in ways no child should endure. For Spencer, it seemed like life was throwing more than one obstacle in their path.
“I remember when Mason was first diagnosed,” Spencer recalls, his voice filled with emotion. “It was the worst news we could have gotten. I had no idea how I was going to be able to handle seeing my son go through this, and it was hard not knowing what the future would hold.”
As if Mason’s health battle wasn’t enough for the family to bear, Spencer’s own life was about to take a dramatic turn. During a routine 10K race, something unexpected happened. Spencer, who had always kept in great shape, suddenly collapsed. His body went into seizure, and he was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered he needed emergency open-heart surgery.

“It was terrifying,” Spencer admits. “One minute, I was running the race, feeling fine, and the next minute, I was being rushed into surgery. It was a complete shock. I didn’t know what was going to happen, and I knew I had to be strong for Mason.”
The situation left Spencer’s family in limbo. Not only was Mason struggling through the early phases of his leukemia treatment, but now his dad was fighting for his own life. Spencer underwent surgery, and for a while, it wasn’t clear how long it would take for him to recover—if he’d be well enough to be there for his son.
As Christmas approached, both Spencer and Mason faced serious health hurdles. Mason’s treatments continued to take a toll on his small body, and Spencer’s recovery from surgery was slow. Despite all of this, Spencer held onto hope, determined to get back to Mason’s side.
Spencer’s heart surgery recovery took ten long days. Despite being weak, Spencer was determined not to miss a moment of his son’s journey. With the help of his doctors and a strong will to recover, he was back at Mason’s side at Texas Children’s Hospital just 10 days after his surgery.
“That time in the hospital was really hard,” Spencer says. “Mason and I were both going through our own battles, and it was tough not knowing what the future would look like. But when I was finally able to get back to him, it was like a weight had been lifted. We didn’t know how we’d make it through, but we did.”

It was a difficult time for the family, but the unexpected recovery and perseverance that both Spencer and Mason showed were nothing short of remarkable. Spencer, despite still being weak from his surgery, was able to leave the hospital and go back to Mason’s side. And together, they faced the challenge ahead—finding strength in each other.
For Spencer, this Christmas meant something he had never experienced before. Normally, as a police officer, he would be working through the holiday season, but this year, he was able to be with his son, celebrating Christmas together as a family.
“For eight years, I’ve missed Christmas with my family because of my job,” Spencer says, his eyes misting over. “I’ve always had to be the one working on Christmas Day, and this year, to be able to spend it with Mason, after everything we’ve been through… it’s just incredible. This Christmas, we were together, and that was the greatest gift I could ask for.”
As a family, they celebrated the holidays in the most meaningful way possible—at home, surrounded by love, with Mason in remission, and Spencer by his side. They cherished every moment, knowing that their journey had brought them closer, both physically and emotionally. It was a Christmas miracle that they could never have anticipated, but one they would forever hold dear.
The healthcare workers at Texas Children’s Hospital played a significant role in making it all possible. Their expertise, care, and unwavering support helped both Mason and Spencer fight through the toughest days of their lives. The hospital became not just a place of healing but a source of hope, and for that, the family is eternally grateful.

“We can’t thank the doctors, nurses, and everyone at Texas Children’s enough,” says Spencer. “They truly helped us when we had no idea how we could keep going. They gave us hope when we needed it the most, and for that, we will forever be grateful.”
As the year comes to an end, Spencer and Mason reflect on their journey—one full of fear, hope, and love. Despite the hardships, they’ve made it through together, stronger than ever.
“We’ve learned so much this year,” Spencer says. “We’ve learned to appreciate the little moments, to be grateful for every second we have together. Christmas is about more than gifts and decorations—it’s about being with the people you love. And this year, we were together. That’s all that matters.”
For this family, Christmas will forever hold a special place in their hearts, not just because of the holiday itself but because it represents their resilience, love, and the miracle of being together when it mattered most.
“This Christmas, we got the greatest gift of all,” Spencer says, looking at Mason with pride. “We got each other. And that’s all we need.”
