R1 PHILADELPHIA FUMBLES THE BAG — AND THIS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR UPDATE HAS EAGLES FANS STUNNED
The Buffalo Bills made a shocking move by firing longtime head coach Sean McDermott on Monday morning. While this doesn’t directly shake up the Philadelphia Eagles as an AFC rival, it could spell disaster for the NFC East champs—especially if Brian Daboll was high on their list for offensive coordinator.
Just hours after McDermott’s ousting, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini dropped a bombshell, naming Daboll as an early frontrunner to take over in Buffalo.
“Chatting with NFL execs league-wide about Buffalo’s head coach hunt, one name keeps popping up: a local hero from Buffalo, and Josh Allen’s favorite—Brian Daboll,” Russini reported.
This twist hits right after ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed the Eagles were gearing up to interview Daboll for their OC vacancy.
Daboll helmed Buffalo’s offense from 2018-21, overseeing Josh Allen’s explosive growth during his first four pro seasons. He’s widely credited with sharpening Allen’s precision and turning him into an elite QB.
That’s exactly why Daboll’s on Philly’s radar. But now, he might bolt back to Buffalo to reunite with the star quarterback he molded into a superstar.
Is Brian Daboll Headed Back to Buffalo as Head Coach?
We don’t know for sure if Daboll tops the Eagles’ OC wishlist yet. But his credentials scream “perfect fit,” making Buffalo’s vacancy a gut-punch for Philly.
With 25 years in the NFL trenches, Daboll has spent 13 as an OC or head coach. His last gig? Four years leading the New York Giants until they canned him mid-2025.
He’s got pedigree from stints under legends like Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. Plus, he shares history with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni.
As Penn Live’s Johnny McGonigal noted, “Daboll crossed paths with Sirianni in 2012 as KC’s OC while Sirianni coached wideouts. Sirianni calls him a ‘mentor.’”
Daboll could supercharge Philly’s staff, but Buffalo’s HC job just jacked up the competition for his services.
Backup Plans: Other Eagles OC Options
If Daboll slips away, the Eagles aren’t out of luck—they’ve got a solid pool of candidates.
McGonigal pegged Daboll and ex-Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel as early favorites when the offseason kicked off.
Philly’s also eyeing another Giants castoff: Mike Kafka, who stepped in as interim HC after Daboll’s exit.
Add Jim Bob Cooter and Zac Robinson to the interview list.
Under Sirianni, the Eagles are staring down their fifth straight year with a new OC. Of the prior four, two landed HC jobs, while Philly axed the others.
The latest shakeup? Kevin Patullo got the boot after the Eagles’ NFC wild card flop last weekend.
