kk.Steelers Owner Art Rooney II Submits Plan for UPMC Rooney Sports Complex Expansion, Governor Josh Shapiro’s Reaction Leaves Steelers Community Disappointed
Pittsburgh, PA – Art Rooney II, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has submitted a plan to expand the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in March 2026.

The expansion will add 90,000 square feet of office and training space, aimed at improving the facilities for both football operations and the business side of the team.
The number of parking spaces will also increase from 400 to 600 to meet the growing demands of staff and the team.
Expanding the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex is viewed as an essential move for the team’s development and to strengthen the Steelers’ competitive edge.
However, this plan has faced opposition from Governor Josh Shapiro, which has left the Steelers’ fan community disappointed.
Art Rooney II shared: “We are committed to investing in the community and the people of this city. This new project will create many jobs and help many people. But perhaps, we will have to wait for the state to approve this plan before we can move forward.”

The plan was submitted in late 2025. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2026 and complete by fall 2029.
However, Governor Josh Shapiro’s response has left the Steelers’ community frustrated. He raised concerns about the cost and practicality of the project.
Shapiro is concerned that investing heavily in sports infrastructure while lacking options for other critical projects may not be the most prudent approach.
“The community needs clarity from the new owners about the future of the team,” Shapiro shared regarding his concerns about the plan.
The governor’s reaction has caused frustration among Steelers fans. They feel rejecting the expansion plan is unfair to the team, especially considering the potential benefits to the community.
While expanding the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex is necessary for maintaining the team’s competitiveness, Shapiro’s response has caused some uncertainty in the Steelers’ community.

Steelers fans are concerned about the future of the team if there isn’t the right investment in infrastructure and development projects.
The UPMC Rooney Sports Complex is a vital part of the Steelers’ development, and this expansion will help the team continue to move forward.
With Shapiro’s opposition, Steelers fans will continue to monitor the situation and hope for a positive outcome for the team and the community.
They hope that these decisions will bring long-term growth and success to the Steelers in the upcoming seasons.
