The Detroit Lions have parted ways with a “valuable” player, surprisingly, but it’s actually for a good reason.
The Detroit Lions have an important game on Thanksgiving against the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field, and they’ll have to play stronger than they did against the New York Giants to pull off a victory. A win is a win, and the Lions beat the Giants in a 34-27 final score, but the Packers are hot this year, and unlike the Giants, they have a healthy franchise quarterback in Jordan Love.
So, it’s time for the Detroit Lions to show everyone what they can do. Getting ready for this game also means getting the team’s roster in tip-top shape, and the Lions are making roster moves. The good news is that the team is making these changes because they’re expecting to get players healthy again and able to take the field.
But, it’s still a little nerve-wracking to see Detroit let go of players who were filling in and did an extraordinary job. That’s the case with a player the team is letting go of today, according to a report.
Detroit Lions Saying Farewell to Successful Fill-In
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported that the Detroit Lions are parting ways with cornerback Art Maulet. In a post on X, he stated, “The Lions are waiving veteran CB Art Maulet today, per source. Detroit is getting some guys back from injury and so they’ll let go Maulet, who played some valuable snaps and had an interception against the Bucs.”
So, this is a player who actually had an interception against Tampa Bay and helped the Lions win that game. It’s a bit of a nail-biter to see them part ways with him, but a team has to do what a team has to do.
“Hopefully the Lions can get him back on the PS,” one follower said, meaning practice squad. “Jet legend, get him back. Dude always plays fast and ball finds him,” one more added.
A Good Sign for the Detroit Lions’ Secondary
Losing Maulet is a good sign that players are getting healthy. But, in a Tuesday, Nov. 25, feature for Detroit Jock City, Cem Yolbulan says that Maulet had an important role with Detroit.
“Maulet played a key role for the Lions after signing with the team in October,” he notes. “During the aforementioned period when the Lions’ secondary was depleted, the 32-year-old cornerback gave Detroit valuable snaps, recording one interception in six games. In his 105 defensive snaps, Maulet received a 62.1 defensive grade on Pro Football Focus.”
Yolbulan adds that Maulet’s “versatility came in especially handy as he found playing time both in the slot and on the outside.”
He also points out that the Lions are almost full strength at the cornerback position now, which is great news. It’s just in time, too, because the team goes up against three strong teams coming up: the Packers, Cowboys and Rams. “The Packers may not have an elite receiver, but the Cowboys and the Rams in the ensuing two games provide a very difficult challenge for any secondary,” he notes.”
So, now is the time when you want to see your favorite team get healthy. Thankfully, that’s happening in Detroit.
