When Ksawcio was 1.5 years old, he was diagnosed with acute hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up in the brain, leading to potentially life-threatening pressure.
The doctors couldn’t pinpoint a specific cause for this condition, and it was a terrifying time for his parents, but they were determined to help their son fight. Ksawcio’s condition required a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt, a surgical procedure that helps drain the excess fluid in the brain.
It was the first of many surgeries he would face.
At the time of his surgery, Ksawcio was still a young child, learning the world around him. He was nonverbal, dependent, and struggled with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), making it even harder for him to express his needs.
However, despite the challenges, Ksawcio showed incredible resilience. He wasn’t able to speak, but his family saw his growth every day. He began eating on his own more and more, and with each passing week, he needed his feeding tube less and less.
By the time Ksawcio was two years old, his family was once again faced with a hospitalization, this time for a routine checkup of his shunt. It was during this visit that doctors discovered something far more alarming than they had expected.
An MRI revealed a spinal cord tumor, with numerous tumor clusters. The diagnosis sent shockwaves through the family.
Their world had just been turned upside down once again. After enduring so much already, Ksawcio and his family were faced with the unimaginable: cancer. The tumor was located in his spinal cord, and the doctors feared it was inoperable due to its location.
The prognosis was devastating — the tumor had already metastasized to the brain and cerebellum. The doctors told them they had very little time, and treatment options were limited. This cruel diagnosis sent the family into a whirlwind of fear and uncertainty.
“We’ve heard the verdict for our son: it’s the most severe type of cancer, inoperable,” his mother shared, her voice heavy with emotion. “This cruel diagnosis keeps us awake at night because we know our chances are slim unless we find modern treatment.”
The family was told to prepare for the worst. The doctors were unsure how to proceed, with the tumor being so deeply embedded in the spinal cord.
Even though Ksawcio had already undergone so many treatments, nothing had prepared them for the gravity of this situation. The fight for his life was only just beginning.
But they didn’t give up.
The family’s journey led them to Essen, Germany, where a specialized clinic could offer the help they desperately needed.
However, there was a major hurdle: the cost of treatment. The family knew the treatment would be expensive, but they didn’t have the luxury of waiting to figure it all out. They had to act quickly, as the disease was progressing rapidly.
“They are afraid to operate because the tumor is located in the spinal cord. We’re waiting for test results and chemotherapy treatment, but we have to go abroad because the disease is attacking at an alarming rate, and we can’t wait,” his mother explained, the urgency in her voice palpable. “
We’re worried about the lack of funds, but even more terrified by the lack of time.”
As if dealing with a life-threatening illness wasn’t enough, Ksawcio’s past experiences with hospitals and treatments had left him deeply anxious and scared. The sight of the nurses and the sound of the medical machines triggered panic in him. He had already been through so much, and the trauma of past procedures made him scared and reluctant to go through any more treatments.
“At the sight of the nurses, he panics,” his mother said with a heart-wrenching tone. “He cries and screams that he doesn’t want to go… It breaks our hearts into a million pieces, but we know that without it, the worst could happen.”
Despite the immense emotional toll, Ksawcio’s family continued to support him with an unwavering resolve.
They sought help, contacted specialists, and made plans to take him to Germany for the much-needed treatment, hoping that it would give him the chance to continue fighting.
Every day, Ksawcio showed more strength than anyone could have expected. Although he couldn’t communicate his feelings with words, his resilience shone through in his actions.
