RM Elon Musk Responds After Robert Downey Jr. Critiques Him, Reigniting Iron Man Inspiration Debate

A new wave of online discussion emerged after Robert Downey Jr. made critical remarks about Elon Musk, prompting Musk to once again address the long-running claim that he partially inspired Marvel’s Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man.

Musk Revisits the Iron Man Comparison

Downey, who portrayed Stark throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, spoke about Musk during an appearance on the On with Kara Swisher podcast. He mentioned that although he had met Musk several times, he wished the Tesla and SpaceX CEO would “rein in his behavior a bit,” adding, “As an almost 60-year-old recovering white American male, I just wish he’d control his behavior a little more — but that’s not my responsibility.”

Downey also commented on Musk’s Mars-centered worldview: “This idea of ‘Everything’s fine because we have to get to Mars’ doesn’t really work for me. But again, you have to acknowledge everything he’s accomplished that makes him significant.”

What the Iron Man Writer Actually Said

Meanwhile, Iron Man screenwriter Mark Fergus has previously explained that the film’s version of Tony Stark wasn’t based on one single figure. According to Fergus, Stark was shaped from a blend of Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and Steve Jobs. He noted, “Musk combined Jobs’ genius with Trump’s flair for showmanship. He was the only one who had the mix of fun, celebrity energy, and real business credibility.”

Musk has long leaned into the parallels between himself and the superhero, often claiming that real-world tech innovators influenced the character. In one interview, when asked whether he’d prefer to be a Marvel hero or a Bond villain, he joked, “I guess I’d prefer to be a Marvel superhero. They did base Iron Man in the movies on me.”

Fans React to the Renewed Comparison

Online fans quickly chimed in, with many poking fun at the idea. One commenter wrote, “I don’t think being the prototype for the billionaire everyone loves to hate is the compliment he thinks it is.” Another remarked, “You mean the first-movie Tony Stark — the arrogant, spoiled guy blowing company money on flashy toys to feel special? That one? Yeah.”
