RM Fact Check: WNBA Star Angel Reese Did NOT Call for a Boycott of American Eagle Over Sydney Sweeney’s Jeans Ad
IT’S NOT TRUE 👇

Did Angel Reese, WNBA star, call for a boycott of American Eagle because of an advertisement featuring actress Sydney Sweeney? No, that’s not the case. There is no evidence to suggest Reese ever made such a statement or demanded a boycott of the brand. The quote circulating online, claiming Reese referred to the ad as “disgusting and disrespectful to black culture,” is completely fabricated. Additionally, the image used in the post has been digitally altered.
The misinformation first appeared on Facebook on August 14, 2025. The post was headlined:
“WNBA Star Angel Reese Calls for MASSIVE Boycott of American Eagle, Decries Latest Ad Campaign Featuring Sydney Sweeney as ‘Disgusting’ and ‘Disrespectful to Black Culture.'”
Accompanying the post was an image that falsely attributed this statement to Reese, alongside the claim:
“American Eagle Should Remember That I Have 3 BILLION Fans Around The World.”
However, a thorough search of news sources revealed no credible reports or statements from Reese about American Eagle, the jeans ad, or any boycott related to Sydney Sweeney’s commercial. We checked major news platforms like Google News and Yahoo! News, and there were no references to Reese commenting on or calling for a boycott over the ad.
While there was indeed controversy surrounding American Eagle’s “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” campaign (covered by HuffPost), Angel Reese was not involved in any of the discussions or actions surrounding it.
The image in question also appears to have been altered. It shows Reese with a mustache, but the original photo, which was published by Sports Illustrated, does not include any such facial hair.
