RM Justine Lindsay — known as the NFL’s first openly transgender cheerleader during her time with the Carolina Panthers

Justine Lindsay — known as the NFL’s first openly transgender cheerleader during her time with the Carolina Panthers — has alleged that her exit from the organization was driven by her gender identity. Lindsay, who joined the Carolina TopCats in 2022, parted ways with the squad in August.
Speaking in a livestream interview with Gaye Magazine last week, Lindsay stated, “I was let go because I’m trans. I don’t want to hear anyone claim I ‘didn’t want to come back.’ Why would I ever choose to leave a team I dedicated three years to?”
Although she expressed disappointment, Lindsay emphasized that she harbors no resentment toward the franchise. “I love that organization deeply. I’m grateful for everything they offered me, but I do feel I was treated unfairly,” she said.
Lindsay added that the Panthers did not fully weigh the broader implications of their decision. “It felt like a huge slap in the face, not only to me but to young people watching,” she remarked. She also linked the timing of her release to the national political climate, noting, “This happened right after Trump took office again.”
Her comment referred to an executive order President Donald Trump issued early in his second term. The order prohibits schools and colleges receiving federal funding and covered by Title IX from permitting men to compete on women’s sports teams or access women’s locker rooms and restrooms.
Fox News Digital has contacted the Panthers for comment on Lindsay’s allegations. Lindsay’s role had previously been celebrated as a milestone for inclusion and representation within professional sports.
