R1 The Miami Dolphins are reportedly targeting a Philadelphia Eagles quarterback in a fresh-start move that could reshape both franchises’ offseasons.
The Miami Dolphins have officially hit the reset button – not just on their coaching staff, but on the entire direction of the franchise. With both the head coach and general manager positions vacated, the organization wasted no time in charting a new course, one that puts the quarterback position squarely at the center of every decision moving forward.
The Dolphins’ first major move came with the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager. Sullivan, a former Packers executive, brings with him a reputation for long-term thinking and conviction in his evaluations – traits that clearly resonated with Miami’s leadership.
During his time in Green Bay, Sullivan was reportedly the first scout to identify Jordan Love as a target and became one of his strongest advocates leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft. That kind of foresight, especially in a quarterback-centric league, made an impression.
What stood out to the Dolphins wasn’t just the evaluation itself – it was the willingness to make a tough call for the future, even if it meant short-term turbulence. In Green Bay, that decision stirred the waters with Aaron Rodgers. In Miami, it could mean a similar shakeup as the team re-evaluates its own quarterback room.
And that room is already in flux. Tua Tagovailoa was benched late in the season, a move that raised immediate questions about his long-term fit in Miami.
Is he still the guy in 2026? That’s a question the new regime will have to answer – and soon.
Meanwhile, rookie Quinn Ewers stepped in to start the final three games of the season. While the sample size was small, his presence alone suggests the Dolphins are exploring all options.
Former head coach Mike McDaniel hinted as much before his departure, noting that the team planned to bring in another quarterback to foster competition and that Ewers had a shot to start next season. Now, with no head coach in place, that decision is on hold – but it looms large.
One intriguing possibility was floated by ESPN analyst Ben Solak, who predicted a trade scenario that would send Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee to Miami in exchange for a mid-round draft pick. McKee, a sixth-round pick in 2024, has spent the past two seasons backing up Jalen Hurts – including during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl-winning campaign in 2025.
Despite limited action, McKee generated some buzz among Eagles fans. As a rookie, he started one game and put up solid numbers: 27 completions on 41 attempts for 269 yards and two touchdowns. His lone start in 2025 was more uneven – 21-of-40 for 241 yards, one touchdown, and one interception – but the intrigue remains.
What makes McKee especially appealing to a team like Miami isn’t just potential, it’s cost. He’s still on a sixth-round rookie deal for two more seasons – a major plus for a Dolphins team navigating a tight salary cap. A low-cost quarterback option could free up resources to address other roster needs, especially with no clear-cut starter locked in.
Of course, without a head coach in place, every major decision – including the quarterback – is effectively on pause. But Sullivan’s early comments offer a window into how this front office plans to operate.
“You always have to be assessing your quarterback situation,” he said. “Making sure that you have a quarterback that you can win with.”
That’s the mission now in Miami. Whether it’s Tua, Ewers, a trade target like McKee, or someone else entirely, the Dolphins are back at square one – and they’re building their next era around the most important position in the game.
