RK The situation surrounding Jaydon Blue has exploded… and it’s now an UNIGNORABLE NIGHTMARE inside the Cowboys organization.
The Dallas Cowboys are about to play a whole lot of football in a short amount of time. And that’s not unusual for them this time of year, but they will play four games (Raiders, Eagles, Chiefs, Lions in 18 days. That is a lot of action in a short amount of time against three Super Bowl-caliber rosters.
Dallas is hopeful that their depth, especially on offense, can withstand the punishment of that four-game stretch. But one spot that is a big concern is the RB2 position. Miles Sanders held that role early in the year, but a season-ending foot injury has turned this into a concerning spot for the Cowboys.
Dallas has been able to cobble together production behind Javonte Williams, but the Cowboys have to find a way to take some of the work off his plate during this stretch. Could Jaydon Blue, the fifth-round pick from Texas, be the answer to that problem?

The Cowboys have a tough decision to make with Jaydon Blue
When the Cowboys selected Blue in the 2025 draft, the hope was that he could make an impact in the passing game right away and add explosiveness to the offense from the backfield. But midway through the season, Blue has just 70 total yards on 23 touches. He has caught just one pass, and a fumble against the Broncos moved him down the depth chart in favor of Malik Davis.
In fact, he was a healthy scratch against the Cardinals, the fifth time this season he hasn’t earned a helmet on gameday.
Since the Week 9 loss, the Cowboys have released Davis from the active roster and re-signed him to the practice squad. That leaves Blue as the only other running back on the team behind Williams. But it’s clear that the trust from the coaching staff is waning, and there has been no rush to get him back on the field.
So, what do the Cowboys do moving forward with Blue? He clearly needs more reps and the only way that he can learn is by playing more. But the coaches don’t trust him and is a liability as a pass-blocker and his lack of physicality in the run game is jarring. Unfortunately, Dallas might not have much of a choice here but to use him more.
Williams is averaging over 18 touches per game, and the Cowboys can’t afford to give him 70+ touches in less than three weeks. That’s not fair to him, especially considering how much he is used as a blocker in passing situations. The only other option is to use Hunter Luepke more as a runner, but Dallas has been hesitant to do that all season. There isn’t another running back on the roster who could answer the call outside of Blue.
Blue probably isn’t ready for more touches. He hasn’t earned them, and it’s hard to trust that he’ll be effective with a bigger role. He is among the lowest-graded running backs in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, and that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has watched him this year.
But the Cowboys can’t afford to keep him as a healthy scratch with no other options on the team. They are going to have to play him and hope things improve rapidly. Otherwise, they are just burning a roster spot at a position that could desperately use a veteran on the street.
With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5-1 after nine games, it’s safe to say that they are in evaluation mode. And with their current roster construction, we are about to see Blue get a lot more work, even if it hasn’t been earned.
